As first nocticed by myself when I refreshed TSN, apparently Joe Thornton has been suspended 2 games for daring to hit another player.
I for one am glad the NHL is standing up for the players who keep their heads down on the ice, who look behind them waiting for a pass, or stare into the corner trying to get a glimpse of the hot girl in the red low cut shirt.
For too long these type of players have been taken advantage of by annoying hockey players who somehow think it is 'fun' or 'good hockey' to lay out a player who isn't paying attention to the action on the ice. With todays suspension, the league is telling us that "YES! The bad hockey players who are weak and not very aware of what is occuring around them" can still have a career. It's about time the Harold Druken's, the Josh Holden's, and the Nathan Smith's of the world get a chance to play hockey without fear of being hit. Alex Daigle, come back to us! You don't have to worry about mean big old d-men hitting you!
Forget the fact that the new no interference rules let forwards have cart blanche to ram d-men into the boards which is probably a bigger cause of head injuries. Forget the fact that the games are called so inconsistently that it's impossible to gage what is a legal hit and what isn't. All that matters is that we react to any hit that looks bad when it's showed on ESPN.
So let's all celebrate the dawn of a new Era in the NHL. The dawn of an era we can only hope the NFL soon follows when they convert to flag football. NHL braintrust, I salute you.
